First butterfly picture of the season. 4-18-06

Eastern tiger swallowtail enjoying the peach blossoms.

Too quick to capture in a photo. This Eastern Tigerswallowtail was enjoying the blueberry blossoms.

i believe this is an 8 spotted forester moth...check out the furry orange legs. It really seemed to like this purple plastic easter egg and wouldn't leave it alone.

These Tiger swallowtails are everywhere! Here is one on the blooming lilacs.

The butterflies are not the only ones enjoying the flowers. The azalias have been buzzing all day with happy bees sipping nectar.

Red Admiral

Rosebreasted Grosbeak on the feeder with a goldfinch.

Rosebreasted Grosbeak, just hanging out in the peach tree.

This picture came out a bit blurry because this indigo bunting wouldn't let me get very close.

This Scarlet Tanager decided to drop by for a visit. He wasn't shy at all, just sat on the peach tree observing Sequoia and i as we ate lunch.

Pretty sure this is a hairy woodpecker, we have a pair that visits this feeder regularly. This is the female.

Sequoia found this gorgeous morel today, right on the edge of our yard. It is about 4 1/2- 5 inches long. 4-29-06

Sometimes the butterflies are just as curious of us, as we are of them. 5-6-06

A few spring flowers. Double pink columbines, Irises, double purple columbines, and blue flax way in the background.

Double purple columbine.

Wild Columbine

Pansies

Frittilary butterflies are everywhere!! Enjoying galliardia above, and sweet william below.

This turtle has been hanging around the yard a lot.

She has a notch in the back of her shell so she's easy to identify.

Sequoia spotted this interesting bug. Some kind of long horned beetle we are guessing.

Baby Praying Mantis. This little guy was about 1 1/2" long. It's pictured on tall phlox.

Monarch on Echinachia

Attack of the Moths!!

Spotted Apatelodes Moth (Apatelodes torrefacta)

We counted nine of these guys. :)

This past week, we woke to find moths everywhere! They were all over one side of our house and in the flowerbed. There was such a neat variety, i couldn't resist snapping some pictures.

Pretty wings, though kept hidden. i think these are Blinded Sphinx, Paonias excaecatus.

Tulip Tree Beauty

Rosy Maple Moth - Dryocampa rubicunda

Luna Moth, looking a bit beat up.

The lifecycle of a Monarch

i used several different chyrsalises to show the completed lifecycle.

Monarch Caterpillar happily munching away on some tasty milkweed. Munch, crunch, munch, crunch.

Caterpillar spins a silk harness and attaches it's back feet in it. Then hangs in the shape of a J.

Caterpillar then sheds it's skin. Within minutes the chysalis will be formed.

Monarch Chrysalis

Chrysalis dark phase

Chrysalis turns transparent just before emergence.

Chrysalis splits

Butterfly slowly emerges

Newly emerged butterfly, looking rather crumpily.

Took the new butterfly outside to dry it's wings in the sun.

Wings have now uncurled and are almost dry.

Resting before taking flight.

Blister Beetle/Oil beetle (Meloe proscarabaeus)
